Chiang Mai’s Eco-Challenges: Tourism, Labor, and Sustainable Growth

Abstract

My article (speech) explores the transformative potential of integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with Sustainable Development to drive economic growth in rural Thailand, particularly in the region of Chiang Mai. Despite its natural beauty and cultural richness, rural Thailand faces significant challenges, including environmental degradation, Myanmar labor issues, and the complexities of local political dynamics. By focusing on sustainable tourism, reducing the environmental impact of practices like forest burning, and improving the conditions for Myanmar migrant workers, businesses can contribute to both economic prosperity and social equity. I highlight how CSR initiatives, when aligned with sustainable development goals, can address these challenges, fostering a collaborative approach that benefits businesses, local communities, and the environment. Through a case study and analysis, I illustrate how a sustainable economic model can be achieved in Chiang Mai, offering a blueprint for rural development across Thailand.
